Field Assistant

Job description
Biennial Yellow-bellied Glider Census, Daintree National Park.
Census History:  A small patch of tall eucalypt forest on the western fall of the Carbine Tablelands, within Daintree National Park, was visited every second year, 1997-2009 inclusive,  in order to count Yellow-bellied Gliders within a given area of 246 ha.  The purpose of this project is to keep track of glider numbers in a given area, over time. The census site in Daintree National Park was chosen as good glider numbers had been noted in 1987 and again in 1995. The opportunity to commence a census arose in 1997 when 10 Swedish students and their Professor visited Australia and wanted a project in “the field”.

My roles
Drove to a spot near Mt Spurgeon early on Day 1, then walk for seven hours to reach the census area, where we made camp. The walk was through trackless forest using a GPS. On the evening of Day 1 I familiarised myself with the census area and identified tapped trees currently yielding sap. For the next 4 consecutive nights I counted the number of gliders coming to my monitoring tree and logged the arrival and departure times as well as direction of nearby glider calls. Day 6, packed camp and hiked out. Day 7, compiled notes and tabled data to submit to research coordinator.

I have recently completed a gruelling shoot in the rainforests of Far North Queensland. Abigail was sent as our guide, to help ferry us around, but her involvement was so much more. The whole team described her as 'exceptional', 'a ray of sunshine' and from the word go, 'very much a member of the team'. She's friendly, patient, hard working, practical and knowledgable. On a tight and challenging project we couldn't have asked for more - she gets a full recommendation from me.

Master of Ceremonies

Job description

Children need the freedom to explore the world around them on their own -- to look under rocks, capture butterflies, and allow their minds to wander freely. This has historically been the life of a child. It is how children have learned to take control of their own lives, at least in their own world of fantasy. Nature Play Queensland supports these ideals.

My roles
Introduce guest speakers and panel of experts during Nature Play Queensland presentation to an audience of 110 parents, teachers and students. Lead and moderate 30 minute panel discussion encouraging questions from the audience not just panel members.

Personal Assistant

Jim Turnour represented the federal division of Leichhardt in the Australian Parliament between 2007 and 2010.

My position as Personal Assistant to Jim Turnour encompassed a wide range of tasks including contacting Departmental staff in order to respond to email and letter inquiries made by constituents. I placed and answered phone calls with and to members of the public, Ministerial staff, Departmental staff, international delegates, lobby groups and senior community representatives. I arranged meetings for the MP and sat in on his behalf when required, I researched bills and provided talking points to assist his speeches to Parliament. I was responsible for managing and maintaining the Member’s diary, including booking and coordinating all travel for him and his family to Canberra for Parliament. During sitting weeks, as the only staff member in Canberra with the MP, I single handedly managed the Member’s office at Parliament House: arranging meetings, engaging with Ministers, staff, lobby groups and other community representatives - both in person and on the telephone. I managed the MP's diary and all correspondence that came into the Parliament office. I prioritised and escalated urgent matters for his attention and responded on his behalf where possible. During non-sitting weeks I was located in the Cairns electorate office, again providing all secretarial and administrative duties as required by the Member.
